Off with the pocket calculators and on with your brain

Third World Competition in Mental Calculation for Children aged 10 – 17 years in Münster

Mathematics connects people across continents! The love of numbers knows no boundaries!
38 children and teenagers from seven countries competed for the title of world champion in mental calculation from the 31st October to the 4th November 2012 in Münster. There were maths-masterminds of both sexes representing Poland, the Netherlands, Russia, Singapore, China, India and Germany.

Off with the pocket calculators and on with your brain – that was the motto.

The required “tools of the trade” to solve difficult mathematical problems without the use of pocket calculators (!) were taught by Dr. Dr. Mittring and his highly qualified team of maths-masterminds.

These are:

    Mr Dr. Dr. Gert Mittring,
nine-fold world champion in mental calculation.
He even has the privilege of being allowed to call
himself Grand Master of Mental Calculation.
    Mr Willem Boumann,
mastermind of mental calculation of the Netherlands
    Mr Jan van Koningsfeld,

    Mr Andrew Robertshaw,

A continuous academic evaluation of the championship was conducted again in 2012 as in the past by Prof. Dr. Friedhelm Käpnick from the Institute for the Didactics of Mathematics and Information Technology of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. Prof. Käpnick is also in charge of the project “maths for little masterminds” at the University of Münster.

Frau Martina Blank, a qualified social worker with many years of experience in working with the highly intellectually gifted, put together a varied programme for the young maths-masterminds. Games and sports in the afternoons were a welcome change from the highly concentrated calculations in the workshops in the mornings.
