Self-determination in progress?!

5th Anniversary of the UN-Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Conference programme

Ever since the UN-Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN-CRPD) came into force in Germany in 2009 the concept of inclusion has been widely and controversially debated. The discussion often centres on the topics of mobility and education. However, the UN-CRPD actually covers many more aspects of the lives of people with disabilities.
In March 2014 the UN-CRPD will have been in force in Germany for five years – time to review the situation and draw the first conclusions. The conference will focus on the area of work and employment in accordance with art. 27 UN-CRPD.

The prerequisite for an autonomous life is the opportunity to generate a personal, freely disposable income. This in turn requires a real choice regarding employment opportunities, preferably including the open labour market. Currently most job opportunities for people with disabilities are to be found in sheltered workshops, far away from the mainstream of society and often with a very limited scope of occupational variation. This is, however, not necessarily as the UN-CRPD intended.
The other factors in the equation are the potential employers. Many are currently developing strategies to cope with the lack of qualified professionals, difficulties resulting from the demographic development and the desire for a good work-life-balance. The obvious conclusion is to use all the human resources society has to offer. Many handicapped people are qualified and highly motivated to take on responsible positions and tasks. In addition they often identify very strongly with the firm they work for and quite by the way they also have a positive influence on the working atmosphere.
It is without doubt a challenge to bring together the human rights approach and guarantees of the UN-CRPD and the practical requirements of the labour markets – creative solutions are required!
The Andreas-Mohn-Foundation will deal with these theoretical and practical aspects of inclusion in the labour market at the conference on the 27th February 2014.

We are looking forward to the conference and to what results it might bring forward!
