Participation Day to mark the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law

On 23 May, a hands-on day was held.

The day marked the anniversary of the Basic Law.

The Basic Law is the most important collection of laws in Germany.

Many people came to the park near the Kunsthalle in Bielefeld.

The Andreas Mohn Foundation had organised the event.

The Kunsthalle Bielefeld, the Bielefeld School of Art and Music and the City of Bielefeld’s Department of Education also took part.

People were able to create things and try out different activities.

The event focused on important topics.

For example:

Freedom
equal rights for everyone
co-determination
living together harmoniously

Many children, young people and families were there.

People who work with children and young people also attended the event.

Participants were able to create pictures and other artworks.

In doing so, they expressed their thoughts and their views on having a say.

It was particularly important that:

Young people should be able to voice their opinions.

They should be able to show how they envisage living together in our society.

Many young people took part.

They engaged deeply with the topics.

This showed that:

Initiatives like this are important.

They provide a space where people can meet, exchange ideas and create something together.

Various groups provided the music.

They played throughout the event.

In addition, the art and music school displayed work by its pupils.

The young people had created the works to mark the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law.

The exhibition complemented the hands-on activities well.

It showed that:

Young people are thinking about important issues.

And they are finding creative ways to express their thoughts.

The atmosphere was good.

Many people struck up conversations with one another.

There were many creative contributions.

The afternoon showed that:

Having a say and getting involved are important.

The rules in the Basic Law cannot be taken for granted.

People need to keep talking about these rules.

And they need to think together about how they want to live by these rules.
