In Germany, it is often difficult for refugees with disabilities or chronic illnesses to get assistive devices such as wheelchairs, walking aids, or hearing aids.
The laws usually only cover urgent medical care.
Since 2016, there has been an assistive device exchange for refugees with disabilities on Facebook and the website www.ability4refugees.de – in both German and English.
On these platforms, people who have assistive devices and people who need them can connect with each other.
The platform has three main areas:
Mobility
Communication
Everyday aids
The human-rights organization Independent Living in Germany (ISL) e.V. and the Andreas Mohn Foundation support ability4refugees to help refugees get assistive devices.
People can list devices on the platform that they no longer need.
Important: all assistive devices must be offered for free.
