The project addresses the question of how forests can survive in the age of climate change.
For over ten years, the Osnabrück grammar school ‘In der Wüste’ and the Oberstufen-Kolleg Bielefeld have been investigating which tree species have the best chances of survival in the future. The project is supported by the Andreas Mohn Foundation, which is providing a one-hectare plot of forest in Hilter in the Osnabrück region.
In close cooperation with the Hilter district forestry office, represented by district forester Robert Rinke, and under the scientific direction of Dr Andreas Stockey from the Oberstufen-Kolleg Bielefeld and the University of Bielefeld, a diverse future forest with seven tree species was recently planted. This serves as a learning and research space. Schoolchildren are actively involved in protecting the seedlings, documenting plants and analysing differences in the plots.
The aim is to promote awareness of the environment and sustainability among young people, enable practical research and ensure the future viability of forests.
The project combines science, education for sustainable development and teamwork, and contributes to modern, responsible school education.
