SCHUBKRAFT

For young adults with initial diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

"Every person should have the chance to live out their potentials with dignity and happiness."

Eva-Maria Mohn, Founder

Empowerment for young adults with multiple sclerosis

SCHUBKRAFT
for young adults with Multiple Sclerosis

The Andreas Mohn Foundation offers young adults in Ostwestfalen-Lippe the digital platform “SCHUBKRAFT.”

Goal of the platform:

  • Provide a place to talk about Multiple Sclerosis

  • Discover your own abilities and strengths

  • Find your own way to deal with the disease

  • Meet other young people with similar experiences

The platform is interactive and digital.
This means participants can communicate online and decide for themselves when and how to join.

SCHUBKRAFT helps participants use their own resources, such as:

  • Their own abilities

  • Their experiences

  • Their personal interests

This way, young adults can learn independently how to live with the disease and lead a dignified, happy life.

How to join:

  • All young adults with Multiple Sclerosis from the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region can participate

  • Registration and information are available on the Andreas Mohn Foundation platform

SCHUBKRAFT through Strength

The project helps young adults with Multiple Sclerosis.

It is about letting participants decide for themselves what they want to do.
They learn to use their abilities and strengths.
They learn how to cope well with the disease.

SCHUBKRAFT through Community

Meet other young people.
Share important things with each other.
Learn to be confident and have fun together.
Together you are strong.

SCHUBKRAFT through Knowledge

Learn new things about the disease.
You get help to make your own decisions.
Knowledge helps you decide for yourself how to live with the disease.

Schubkraft through power!

Empowerment aims to strengthen your self-determination, your resources and your individual way of dealing with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. Empowerment is an attitude! It is about facing up to multiple sclerosis, using resources from yourself and others, and especially about continuing to pursue your own goals and ideas about life. Your autonomy remains secured. We offer you together with other participants in small workshops to get to know this attitude and to adopt it practically in your everyday life with small exercises.

Schubkraft through knowledge!

EmpowerMED offers you knowledge through medical and psychological information to make your own decisions for your individual life. Knowledge is a key for self-determined and individual decisions in dealing with multiple sclerosis. You can expand your competence in dealing with doctors, psychologists and medical professionals and practice dealing with yourself at eye level. We bring you into contact not only with other young adults, but also with professionals from the medical field who enjoy sharing their knowledge with you and encouraging you to deal with multiple sclerosis in a self-determined way.

Schubkraft through networking!

Developing your own network on your topics is the goal of events under the heading "Network". Here you can learn together with others why an individual network can strengthen you and let you act more freely, despite multiple sclerosis. Because the more supporters you have, the stronger you are in your autonomy. And: You can also become part of a network of others and thus pass on your skills in dealing with multiple sclerosis or act as a supporter. This in turn gives us all a sense of solidarity, community, efficacy and health.

Schubkraft through resources!

You have many strengths.
There are many things you can do well.

In this program, you will learn:
What are you good at?
What makes you strong?

You will also think about:
Where can you use your strengths?
How can you improve them?

You are not alone.
You work together with other young people.
Trained helpers support you.

Sometimes we feel bad.
Then we may think:
“I am not good at anything.”

But that is not true.
You can do more than you think.

Here you will learn:
How to remember your strengths.
How to find new energy.

This can help you
live well with your illness
and feel strong as a person.

Schubkraft through resilience!

Resilience means inner strength.
It means you can handle stress and stay steady.

Resilience helps you to adjust
when life is hard.
It helps you deal with problems
in your thoughts,
with other people,
or in daily life.

Maybe the first news about your illness
was very hard for you.
Maybe it felt like a shock.

You may feel like
“a hamster in a wheel.”
You try to do everything at once.
You want to manage school, training,
work, or studies.

But there is another way to see yourself.

You can be
“like a rock in the sea.”
Around you, many things are happening.
But you stay calm and steady.
You keep your balance
even when life feels chaotic.

In our workshops, you will learn:
How to become stronger inside.
How to stay calm in hard times.
How to use your strengths in daily life.

Schubkraft through mindfulness!

You cannot stop the waves.
But you can learn to surf on them.

This picture shows:
You can learn to handle your illness better.

Mindfulness can help you.

Mindfulness means:
You pay attention to yourself.
You notice how you feel right now.

The goal is:
You connect with yourself again.

You take short breaks.
For a few minutes,
you step out of the stress of daily life.

You notice:
How do I feel right now?
What do I need?

Mindfulness helps you:
You become calmer.
You can focus better.

The illness is still there.
Sometimes it is hard.
Sometimes you lose balance.

That is normal.

With practice, it becomes easier.
You find your balance faster.
You can handle difficult moments better.

In our workshops, you will learn:
The first steps of mindfulness.
You practice together with others.
Trained helpers guide you.

Schubkraft through mental training!

Mental training has long been used in sports and in the development of potential. It is about how and with which mental beliefs and convictions we look at the world and ourselves. How can you have a positive impact on dealing with multiple sclerosis by changing these basic mental beliefs? Mental training originally referred to a training method for optimizing athletic movements in sports psychology. Today, mental training is used in almost all areas of life, where it is about potential development and dealing with challenges. With our workshops for you we focus on information about "Mindsets" according to Prof. Carol Dweck. You can gain practical experience, e.g. how to promote a "Growth Mindset" and try out other mental techniques.

Schubkraft through goals and time management!

In our workshops, you will learn:
Planning your goals and time can be easy and changeable.
We will show you ways to plan that fit well into your life.
You can try them out and talk about them with others.

Often, we think of plans as fixed schedules.
We believe: “I must do everything at this exact time!”
This can make stress, because life often changes.

In our workshops, it is about this:
Good plans can change with life.
They help you stay on course.

Imagine you leave the harbor with a boat.
You have a goal and know where you want to go.
But sometimes a storm comes.
Then you go off course.
You cannot stop this.

But you can:
After the storm, steer back to your goal.
Look for a new way.
See if your goal is still possible.
Or get close to your goal.

This way, you reach the harbor calmly and safely.

Especially with long-term illnesses and important goals,
changeable planning is very helpful.

Be curious and try it in our workshops.
Just like the motto: I DID IT MY WAY

Schubkraft through special information!

Special Information for Young Adults with Multiple Sclerosis

We want to give you and other young people with MS special information.
The information fits your current life situation.

We connect you with experts:

  • from medicine

  • from psychology

  • from school, training, work, and studies

Here you can ask questions that are important to you.
You can talk together with other young people and experts about different parts of life.

What you do with this information is your own choice.

Schubkraft Though knowledge of Law and participation!

Rights and Participation

Participation benefits are special help from the government.
They help you make your own decisions.
They let you take part in life in society.
They also try to prevent disadvantages or make them smaller.

This is especially important for you in:

  • School

  • Training

  • Studies

  • Work

You may ask yourself:

  • What rights do I have with a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis?

  • What is special support for disadvantages, and why is it useful to apply for it?

  • How do I apply for it?

  • Am I now “disabled” if I get a disability ID?

  • What are my advantages?

  • Are there also disadvantages in participation laws?

We want to help you find answers to these questions.
We work with experts from law, education, and work.
This way, you can make your own choices.

Schubkraft through health management!

Food and Exercise

Food and exercise are very important,
especially for illnesses that last a long time
or come back often,
and for illnesses of the nervous system.

An illness that lasts a long time or comes back often
usually cannot be completely healed.
But you can learn to live well with it.

The nervous system is the part of your body
that connects your brain, spine, and all your nerves.
It helps your body to feel, move,
and send messages.

You can also think of it like a telephone or electricity network
that connects everything in your body.

You can learn:

  • How exercise can be fun

  • Which sports are good for you

  • That you do not have to stop doing sports

In our courses, you can:

  • Ask questions

  • Get information

  • Try things yourself, for example “mindful walking” as gentle exercise

There will also be courses about food.
Here you can learn with experts:

  • The ideas behind healthy eating

  • Practice exercises

Schubkraft through stress resilience!

Stress

Too much stress can hurt your body and your health.
Especially if you have few ways to deal with it.

Stress can also make the signs of illnesses that last a long time
or come back often worse.

You can learn:

  • How to deal with stress

  • How to share hard tasks over time

  • How to stop stress before it starts

Sometimes stress can also be useful.
It is important to find a balance.

In the courses from Schubkraft, you can learn:

  • What helps against stress

  • What you want to try yourself

  • What you already know and what works for you

  • How to use these ideas in your daily life

You make plans together with experts and other young people.
You can try these plans and see if they work well for you.

Schubkraft through peer mentoring!

Support with People Your Age

Self-effectiveness means:
You notice that you can make a difference.
This happens when you share your knowledge, skills, and experiences with someone else.

Your path is an example for you.
The path of another person will be different.

Support means:

  • You are ready to share

  • You do not tell the other person exactly what to do

People learn best from others who are like them and have real experiences.
You can help someone and be by their side.
You can give courage to find their own way.

Support with people your age is good for both:

  • You learn from the other person

  • The other person learns from you

If you are curious, sign up for support with people your age.
You can try and see what new strength you can develop.

Schubkraft for families!

YOUR Family

This is about YOUR family.

Families can be very helpful,
but sometimes also difficult.

How do you deal with this?
What has helped other people in similar situations?

In our family programs, we show you many kinds of information about different family topics.

This can be, for example:

  • “How do I deal with my parents? How can I find out what I can do and want?”

  • A talk about starting a family with Multiple Sclerosis

This way, you get ideas and support for your own situation.

The team

Your Team Schubkraft introduces itself

We are Eva-Maria and Andreas Mohn.
We live with the disease multiple sclerosis. My husband has multiple sclerosis, and I support him as his partner.

My husband started the project “Schubkraft”.
He wants to help people who have just learned that they have multiple sclerosis.

With “Schubkraft”, you can learn to:

  • discover your own strength

  • live your life actively and with joy, even with multiple sclerosis

  • be brave and find new ways

We want to show: Multiple sclerosis can change your life, but it cannot control everything. Everyone can find their own way and feel their own strength.

My task in the project:
Give the project energy and support

What drives me?
People should find their own ways that fit them.
This works through the connection of each person, the group, experiences, and knowledge.

I want to create a place
where people can decide for themselves, share with others, and grow.

This is my passion.

To create a framework for self-determined exchange and growth, that is my passion.

Simon Klaholz
Quality Manager and Tool Planner

My task in the project:
Member of the Schubkraft group and helper with people my age

I always look for new ways to make life easier.
I enjoy meeting new people and seeing how they live their lives.
I like to share my knowledge, help others, and give them new ideas.

Diana Karrenführ

My task in the project:
Member of the Schubkraft group and helper with people my age

I want to share my positive energy with others.
Simple things are important to me, like a happy conversation
or a cup of coffee in the morning sun.
I am a good listener and use this skill to help others in the group.

Diana Krüger
Lawyer
Board Member

My task in the project:
Team member with helping hands and new ideas

What drives me?
It is important to get to know yourself and your own abilities.
Sharing this path and this knowledge makes the project Schubkraft very valuable to me, in addition to all the information it offers.

Nebile Alter-Morali
Lawyer
Board Member

My task in the project:
As a board member of the Andreas-Mohn-Foundation, I support the goals of the project.
I am happy to work actively and help shape things.

What drives me?
The first diagnosis of MS makes many people afraid and unsure.
With the Schubkraft project, we can help take away this fear
and give simple solutions to make things clearer.

Funktion im Projekt:
Mitgestaltung und Pflege des Internetauftrittes

Was treibt mich an?
